NEW CITY ART FAIR, Japanese Contemporary Art Fair, successfully closed its New York 2014 edition on Sunday, March 9th.
Nine galleries from Japan participated in the art fair with over 1500 people attending this event. Attendees included art collectors, museum curators, gallery directors from major cities such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles, etc. While people had a high opinion of quality of Contemporary Japanese art, we also received voices of expecting the works with higher market value. On a mission to deliver contemporary Japanese art to art lovers around the world, NEW CITY ART FAIR New York 2014 gained great success with even greater potential for next year.

Highlights

ARTIST PERFORMANCE

Artist performances by three artists were held during NEW CITY ART FAIR. Miyake Shintaro in a poker dealer costume at the booth of TOMIO KOYAMA GALLERY kept working on a mural drawing for four days. Many visitors also joined and enjoyed our interactive art programs. A portrait drawing by Nobutaka Aozaki who draws on the New York’s common take-out plastic bags“Smiley Bag” , and also a project by Takao Sakai who takes photographs of “AZURER” people who wears an interesting beard made out of adzuki beans.

JAPANESE ARTISTS in NYC STUDIO VISITS

NEW CITY ART FAIR provided a rare and wonderful opportunity to visit Japanese artists’ studios by a shuttle bus. Seven New York based Japanese artists discussed their work, and gave glimpses of their private workspaces in Brooklyn and Queens, most of which have never been open to tourists.

SPONSORS BOOTH

NEW CITY ART FAIR set a sponsor’s booth for introducing “LUMINE meets ART” an art project of LUMINE, a department store with fifteen buildings in Japan. Also Japansese premier sake “KIZAKURA”and Japanese snacks sponsored by NISHIMOTO Trading Co,.Ltd were served during the art fair. Especially MASUZAKE at the opening party was well received, and many people asked about the detailed information of sake.

As only one contemporary Japanese art fair in New York, NEW CIT Y ART FAIR attracted attention of media. The art fair has been gradually infiltrated into the New Yorkユs Armory Arts Week scene. This year, NEW CITY ART FAIR was featured in a wide range of media including “SKY” the DELTAユs airplane magazine.
